The Street

The Thought

Time rushes by. Life rushes by. Love rushes by. Somewhere along the way it all turns: on a chance meeting, a train taken or missed, a street chosen where the road divides. Every decision closes a door, and every closed door opens another. Much of modern life is the effort to choose well in all of this.

And sooner or later the question comes: how might it have been? Dans une autre vie, in another life.

Dans une autre vie holds both. It keeps the quiet melancholy of the paths not taken, and it celebrates the life that was chosen instead: every day of it, as though it were to return again and again, and be chosen each time anew.

This life, as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and countless times more; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every pleasure, every thought and sigh, and all that is unspeakably small or great in your life must come back to you.

Friedrich Nietzsche  ·  Die fröhliche Wissenschaft, § 341, 1882
